Grey Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius) Dungeness NNR

            On a quiet day at Dungeness very pleased to have found this Grey Phalarope that performed close to beach from near the fishing boats .This Arctic-breeding wader sometimes gets blown in bad weather to the shores of the uk  around 200 birds per year are seen. Grey phalaropes spend a large proportion of their lives out at sea many miles from land.  They sometimes are seen spinning round and round in the water picking up small shrimps etc as they spin . With a length of 20 to 22   cms and a  weight  of only 50 to 75 grams they seem to me to be a very small bird to live out on the open sea .
