- Construction took around 100 years by monks of the Order of Saint Jerome (Hieronymites)

- Originally a monastery, later became burial place for Portuguese royalty like Vasco da Gama

- Now houses museums like the National Archaeological Museum and Maritime Museum

- Highlights include the lavishly decorated cloisters, refectory hall, and church interior

- Considered one of Portugal's top historic sites for its beauty and significance

It's clear the Jerónimos Monastery is a marvel of 16th century Portuguese architecture and a monument to the country's golden age of exploration and discovery.
