The snap of branches underfoot,
Leads my mind along pathways
No longer travelled;
Creeping through shadows
Cast before trees,
Memory captures a scene
Where the trees are still standing
Their scent drifting through the years;
Where Sunday’s bell tolls,
The beat of time,
Rippling over the hills.

Now I stand there a child again
In the midst of a woodland dream,
Small feet dancing along a stony path,
Heart pounding to freedom’s tune.
Then time takes a breath
When the corner is turned,
My eyes travel so far and so wide
On a blue perfumed veil,
That quivers before my feet.
Each tiny blue bell
As it sways in the breeze
Sings in chorus to worship
The spring.

Quickly, spring travels on
The blue carpet unfurls
Capturing hill and vale;
To the place I stand now,
Many miles from that hill;
Hearing whispers of childhood footsteps,
Playing inside my mind.
