Corey is a city boy, and he was amazed at how many stars you can see out here in the country. He asked me about taking photos of the stars, so I decided we should try doing some star trails.

This photo is fairly disappointing compared to some you see, but since it was my first go, I thought I'd post it anyway.

We didn't have a remote to hold the button down for us, so we put it on bulb and Corey jury rigged some masking tape to do it.

We left it for half an hour, and when we came back the battery had gone flat. Somehow it had managed to save the photo though.

There is a bit of light pollution, since we were in town, and a whole lot of sensor noise (any dot that isn't streaked is noise, rather than a star). I read in an article about doing star trails that some cameras have a system called "dark frame or long exposure noise reduction" which can get rid of that noise for you. Pretty sure my camera doesn't have that though.

Anyway, it was pretty cool taking this, so I am going to use some of the advice from that article, and go somewhere with less light and some interesting vistas and try again.
