Offshore Marine Layer - a photo on Flickriver

            Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, California

A small, gray, foggy marine layer hovers offshore as the setting sun lights up the clouds.  We are standing on a bluff above Pfeiffer Beach.

A marine layer is a thermal inversion formed when warm air from the land settles on top of the cold ocean water.  The surface air is cooled by the water, becomes denser than the air above it, and is thus trapped, often producing fog within the marine layer.  This bit of inconvenient meteorology is the bane of photographers along the Pacific coast during summer months.
