Chicago as a Vinyl Record - a photo on Flickriver

            I started a new project where I photographed old vinyl then aspects of the city and created a multiple exposure incorporating both.  It has a great deal to do with a few things...there's a sound a city has and a soundtrack that follows you everywhere.  Different neighborhoods have different sounds but all are part of the collective consciousness that drives the whole thing, perhaps the whole world really.

Often, I am listening to music when I am in the city and even, at times, when I am walking around outside.  I'm very fond of music to help me get through the cold and loneliness of winter.  I often notice everyone else who is listening to their own soundtrack too...and I think about how wonderful and yet how desolate all that is because you miss out on other things that way. 

My favorite music to listen to in the winter is usually by Leonard Cohen (the old stuff, mainly) , PJ Harvey's White Chalk, the band Low, and Sharon Van Etten's first three albums. 

The thing about vinyl that is very different is that it's warm but often a little rough around the edges, a little dusty and scratchy.  It shows it's age and sometimes wears it on it's sleeve (that's a horrible pun, I realize).  It's less clean than a cd but it also feels a little more sterile too.  It makes sense for me that one might connect with vinyl more than other mediums for this reason. 

I also like listening to the following things:

1. The sound of the train accelerating and decelerating.

2. The sound of a passenger gratefully boarding a bus who stopped between stops for her/him because it was cold and she/he was running.

3. The sound of the coffee pot at work, which sounds like it's churning around and groaning at the same time.

4. The sound of all of the people, even the crazy people, on various downtown street corners creating their own rhythms.

5. The sound of the waves of Lake Michigan when they hit the sides of the pier. 

6. The sounds of the very old buildings settling slowly and unexpectedly like bones.

7. The sounds of kids playing outside at recess when there is no bullying going on. 

8. The sound of firecrackers hitting the ground during Chinese New Year celebrations.

9. The sound of the pipe organ being played at the Music Box Theater. 

10. The sound of ice thawing and breaking and the promise I'll live to see another spring.
