The old trading place Hopsjø - a photo on Flickriver

The trading place Hopsjø was one of the Trøndelag coast’s largest trading places in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Parelius family ruled here for over 250 years as merchants and proprietaries, with a warehouse pier, outer pier, a 50 meter long barn, pig house, chicken house, gazebo, bakery, smithy, bar, annex and the main house which was completed in 1730. The family also owned 10 cottages, 4 churches and 2 fishing villages. Among these were the fishing village of Titran, the largest at the time, as well as Dolm church.

Nils Rosing Parelius (1753-1799) early made Hopsjø a famous trading house with a rich and exciting history. Nils transported fish products on his own ships from Hopsjø to Spain and the rest of Europe, and on the return he brought with him precious goods such as fruit, tobacco and spirits in the cargo. Goods were transported, some were bought and some were also smuggled, because Parelius himself was a guy with a lot going on.

Today you will find perhaps the oldest preserved grocery store in Norway at Hopsjøbrygga and some trade is carried out in this even today. Today’s building mass also houses a small whaling museum and perhaps Hitra’s most famous eatery from ancient times, Traktørstedet Landstrykeren. Hopsjøbryga’s history over the last 27 years is the sum of invaluable hard work and help from the local community, and especially the generous people in the “old boat association” Nattseilerne and what must be said to be the region’s most fashionable women’s club, Hopsjøen’s friends.
