Lineup: Sanshins, Guitar, Sanba, Fue & Shime-daiko/Okinawan Odaiko.

These two groiups were founded in 2001 in London and 2008 in Paris, both bringing together Japanese and local musicians. They came together here in various combinatios, larger and smaller. Both groups play music from Okinawa Prefecture, a chain of islands south west of Japan. Traditional Okinawan music is best known for the Sanshin (a 3-string lute) and Eisa Dance. I first saw the London Okinawa Sanshinkai in 2006 on the steps of St Paul’s as part of the City of London Festival. I have taken photos of them four times before, at Japan Matsuri in 2011, 2012 and 2016 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/tags/japanmatsuri,londo... and at Okinawa Day in 2016 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157671125035785/). I have only photographed the Paris Sanshin Club once before at the 2019 Okinawa Day Preview (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157709505231212/).
