Dawes Lightning - a photo on Flickriver

Dawes Lightning

            Year of manufacture unknown. Bought secondhand in 1993 for £60 as I recall, with the wheels clearly not the originals, and the left brake lever extension broken. A fine machine, but made for a form a travel (racing) that's never been my style. Mudguards were an early addition, and the carrier followed not long after. The tyres were replaced in 2005 and, with the wheels being a by then rare imperial size, cost almost as much as the bike had cost 12 years earlier. The effectiveness of the tiny brake pads was matched by the shortness of their life. Retired from regular use not long after the expense of the new tyres, as mechanical wear and tear became ever more expensive to repair ('nobody makes that size any more'). With lack of space and use, it was donated to Swindon Recycles on Saturday 14th June 2014.
