Less than First Class - a photo on Flickriver

            You might think that serving a drink of apple juice would be a simple thing to do well. In the case of a recent journey, on the 'Red Dragon' First Great Western service, a 'complimentary' 'glass' of apple juice was requested from the trolley that passed. One of the catering staff started to pour, then realised the plastic vessel was leaking. She and her colleague then decanted what had already been poured into another plastic vessel, all done, without much attention, with the liquid held above my legs rather than over their trolley, or anywhere else that the spillage might cause little offence.

Those joining the train at Reading would have had to be somewhat more determined to get the 'complimentary', i.e. paid for in the price of their ticket, refreshments, as the trolley was pulled at speed back and forth through the first class carriages.

This particular serving of apple juice was served rather more graciously two days later. The trolley service was also provided more in the spirit of service too. I am not sure whether the presence, from Reading, of the First Great Western Regional Onboard Service Manager East, in the seat to the left in this image, had any impact on that. Less impressive was that said manager, although this was the 'Quiet Carriage' immediately took two mobile phones from his pocket at soon as he sat down, and had to dash out twice to take a call.
