Sunset Beach Post Office mural - a photo on Flickriver

Blink and you'll miss it. Sunset Beach is a 1 1/4 - mile beach-side sliver along the northern edge of Orange County's stretch of the Pacific Ocean. For more than 100 years, tourists and residents have been drawn by the beauty and serenity of the surf-side sanctuary, where pretty much anywhere is a short walk to the sand. In the 1920s, the stretch of road from Anderson Street to Warner Avenue was dotted with one- and two-story beach cottages, which over the years have been torn down, remodeled or replaced with ultramodern, tri-level mansions. One sold for $7.4 million, an 8,000-square-foot, six-bedroom, six-bathroom custom home. Actress Sandra Bullock and Jesse James had a huge home on the beach (until their break-up). Until 2011 in was unincorporated, and had only volunteer firefighters and limited services. Now they are part of the much, much larger city of Huntington Beach; but Pacific Coast highway still runs thru the middle of the place, and on the surface little has changed.
