The Challenge to leap the moat - a photo on Flickriver

            The Yokohama Bell of Friendship on Shelter Island. Since sometime after 1958, someone we all know (I still can't reveal his identity, as who knows, he may do it again...) has leapt across the water-filled * moat, swung the heavy wooden beam, and rung this 2 1/2 ton bell... more than once... and it seems there was always a damsel (not always the same) to witness the event.

* Moat... what is a moat? A wide barrier, often filled with water, used to prevent 'invaders' from easily reaching the place being protected by the moat! They often surround castles.... Can you say "knight"?

(From the website:) The bell itself stands 6-feet high and weighs in at almost two and one-half tons. The words "Bell of Friendship" are inscribed on it in both English and Japanese. Like other traditional Japanese bells, the Friendship Bell has no clapper inside. It is rung instead by being struck with a large wooden ram that is suspended horizontally from two v-shaped chains in the bell house. To ring the bell, the ram is pulled back with a lanyard and then released, which causes it to strike a specially raised surface on the bell. The bell house is typical of those found in Japan. It is open on four sides and surrounded by a moat.
