The day begins with breakfast hunt for a Marsh Harrier!

            As we watched the sun rise against the lake, a lone raptor crossed the beautiful orange sky in front of us. It was early in the morning on the western coast of India in Gujarat - the sunrise was around 7.15 AM (compared to around 6.35-6.45 in my place down South) and we were there around 6.30. The large lake was quite still, the cold wind was a bit strong for us as we were lightly dressed expecting a hot morning. Many birds were still on their roosting perches, or sleeping peacefully in the water unmindful of the wind or cold.

The Marsh Harriers were already busy - they are usually active 30-45 mins before sunrise and a few of them already caught their prey, we sighted the action. This Harrier, flying into the sun, also shortly caught a prey on a small island full of waders - not sure what species was that though. It was too much to ask the boatman - who was pushing the boat by a stick - no motor - in the shallow lake (he pushed it almost 8-10 kms till 12.00 noon) - to take us to that island in the wind. But it was a memorable morning that we enjoyed very much - watching the birds - several lifers for me - peaceful and enjoying the first light of the day!
