A Little Spiderhunter looking for water!

            An interesting bird found in the forests of South India in a very small range. The bird seems to be quite common across South East Asia though. They are about 13-16 cms long and have a long beak that makes it easier to identify them.

They are mostly found around Banana trees or flowering trees in the forests where they are sighted darting off on the top and under looking for spiders. The bird - a bit bigger than the common sunbird was quite agile and it was hard to keep up with it in the canopy and bush! 

During our trip, we sighted several of them, mostly around Bamboo trees looking for spiders and insects or taking nectar out of flowers. The Bamboo clumps are magnets for a variety of birds species as well as snakes, so waiting around them is often productive.
