A Long Tailed Minivet on a cherry tree

            One of the more colorful species of minivets found in Northern India and very similar to the more common Scarlet minivet. The Scarlet miniviet and this minivet are very similar with some minor differences in the coverts. We confirmed the id of this bird through a call.

This Long Tailed minivet is about 17-20 cms long and while the male is reddish / orangish color, the female is bright yellow - both these birds are unmissable in the wild due to their bright colors. We sighted them in a Cherry / Apple mixed orchard during the non-fruiting season and the birds were hunting insects in the trees. This is the beginning of the nesting season and hence we saw pairs during all our sightings.
