Patchwork - a photo on Flickriver

Patchwork

            On one side, a yellow and purple blanket, and on the other a green quilt. One of the more fascinating things to me about the way wildflowers bloom year after year, and especially in a “super bloom” like this one in 2019, is how the blooms relate to the geology and the biology. On one side of this divide shrubs are laid out as if in a grid pattern. While there are tiny enclaves of hillside daisies, the entire slope is virtually devoid of wildflowers in comparison to the other side of the valley where the abundance of daisies and purple phacelia is overwhelming. While the environment seems like it should be the same, the orientation of these slopes is enough of a force of selective pressure to cause such a stark divide in vegetation. I just find that remarkable, and it is one of the nuances of the natural world that should inspire curiosity and appreciation, though our culture has little room for such. I noted also the large bush with the clear dirt surrounding it, showing that it has evolved to fend off would be competitors who might encroach on its territory in this climate of scarce resources. The world is full of wonders if you look.
