            A branch of Daitokuji Temple founded in 1601 by Hosokawa Tadaoki (1563-1645). A great and famous warrior, Hosokawa fought under Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Korea and supported Tokugawa Ieyasu in the establishment of his shogunate. His wife, Gratia (or Gracia), was both a devout follower of the banned Catholic church and the daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide who attacked Oda Nobunaga and caused his death by seppuku. Despite this, Hosokawa was awarded vast estates but, after the wars, spent considerable time at Daitokuji where he studied Zen and practiced tea under the tutelege of Sen no Rikyu himself who once resided in the shoin (house) on the grounds. Hosokawa built the teahouse known as Shoko-ken. There is another known as Horai. Hideyoshi used to have tea ceremonies on this site. The garden, designed in the early Edo period, is extremely elegant with an unusually long and complex approach path, and with broad stretches of moss under the maple trees and bamboo.
