Wat Mai, Luangprabang Province - a photo on Flickriver

            So beautiful that even the Haw Black Flag marauders spared it during the destruction of Luang Prabang of the 1880s, Wat Mai, whose name translates as New Temple after restoration work in the 1820s, is a stunning golden temple. As one of the few remaining temples after the destruction of the city, Wat Mai, which housed the Prabang, the sacred symbol of Luang Prabang, became the royal temple. Even after the Prabang was rehoused in the Royal Palace, once a year it is taken to Wat Mai, in a ceremonial procession, where it is on display for all to see for a few days. The bas-relief walls created from black lacquer that is then gilded, tell the Jataka tale of Prince Vessantara, while inside, the red interior has been stencilled with gold, complementing the golden exterior of this five roofed temple.
