Seven Moons Around Saturn - a photo on Flickriver

            
This photo captured seven of the nine major moons of the planet Saturn.

Reading from left to right, the seven moons are as follows (with magnitudes and diameters): Hyperion (m = 15.1, diam. = 300km), Iapetus (m = 11.5, diam. = 1450km), Titan (m = 9.1, diam. = 5150km), Tethys (m = 10.9, diam. = 1070km), Enceladus (m = 12.5, diam. = 494km), Rhea (m = 10.3, diam. = 1530km),  and Dione (m = 11.1, diam. = 1120km). The moon Hyperion is difficult to see given its magnitude of 15.1 which is more than one half million times fainter than the planet Saturn (the moons are easier to see in the Flickr light box).

Missing from the photo are the moons Mimas and Phoebe. Mimas was too close to the overexposed image of Saturn to be visible while Phoebe orbits so far from Saturn that it could not be framed in this shot. Phoebe is also a very small, dark, and faint object and probably could not have been recorded given the equipment used for this photo.

The stars TYC 5592-0705-1 (m = 11.4), GSC 5592-0580 (m = 14.6), GSC 5591-0540 (m = 12.5), and GSC 5591-0526 (m = 13.6) are also identified as brightness references.

Photographed on June 8, 2014 at 11:13PM PDT using a Stellarvue SV80ST2, 80mm aperture, refractor telescope and a Sony NEX-5N digital camera (ISO 800, a stack of twenty-two images each exposed for five seconds, producing a total exposure integration time of just under 2 minutes). A Tele Vue 2X Powermate was used with the telescope to produce an effective focal length of 960mm at f/12.
