Brünig Railway, Class De 110, No. 110.005-6, Interlaken Ost. 08.1994.

            The Brünig Railway (Brünigbahn) is a metre gauge Swiss  narrow gauge railway line, which links Luzern / Lucerne, in central Switzerland, with Interlaken, in the Bernese Oberland. The line runs via Alpnachstad, Giswil, Meiringen and Brienz, and passes over the Brünig Pass, using sections of rack railway to overcome the gradients, but with most of the line operated by normal adhesion methods.
The line is 74 kilometres (46 miles) long and opened in stages between 1888 and 1916. Between 1903 and 2004, it was the only narrow gauge line of the Swiss Federal Railways. 
Along with the Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line, it now forms part,  of the Zentralbahn and is served by Inter Regio trains that operate the full length of the line, with regular (non-rack) Regio trains between Interlaken and Meiringen and Luzern / Lucerne S-Bahn trains between Lucerne and Giswil. The section between Hergiswil and Lucerne is shared with the Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line.
No. 110.005 is the last of six, De 110 Class of electric railcars, which were originally built in 1941 / 1942 and rebuilt between 1987 and 1993 by SLM. Originally motor luggage vans, their rack equipment was removed and push / pull equipment fitted during the rebuild. they are used on the adhesion sections - between Luzern and Giswil and between Interlaken and Meiringen.
At the time of this photograph, August 1994, the railcar was operated by SBB.
