La Méduse - a photo on Flickriver

La Méduse

            Here is a picture of “La Méduse” like you could admire here at Brick Mania Antwerpen last weekend.

Now the build is ready, the decks are finished, the masts are all there, only a pinnace and/or a barge need to be built. There are almost 130 different minifigs on it.

The rigging is another story. After 2 months of knotting the main rigging is ready, but still a lot need to be done. I used already more than 250 meters of 3 differed ropes. The rigging of the top of the masts need to be redone as the ropes I used are not good enough (they are too stiff).

The sails are made of a special fabric used to make curtains. Maybe I will add other sails later. But for the moment La Méduse is anchored in a harbour so other sails are not needed.

I have no idea what the future will bring but I’m thinking to make a real display with a harbour etc.

Like I mentioned in previous posts, I drilled out the masts and I reinforced them with an iron shaft of 5 mm. The use of an iron shaft was necessary due to the height of the masts and the rigging work. Also some bricks and plates are cut to obtain the right angle.

This MOC is based on the French comic series “ L'Épervier “ (Author and illustrator - Patrice Pellerin). The comics tells the life story of Yann de Kermeur, a French noblemen and captain of a royal frigate who lives in and around Brest (France). Yann’s frigate calls “La Méduse” and was built in the 18th century. “La Méduse” is built by using the original plans from another similar French frigate “La Rénommée”. This ship was built by the same French masterbuilder and launched in 1744 (some years after “La Méduse”), but captured by the English much later. After capturing the frigate, the English made a study of this frigate, at that time the French frigates were faster and stronger than the English ones.

The original plans still exist and they forms the basis of a monograph (this book is part of a series of books devoted to the most representative ships of the French Navy in the classical period). This books contains more than 30 plans of the interior and exterior of the ship in scale 1/48. This monograph is especially made for model builders. I bought this book and it is the main source of information. Additional info and pictures are obtained from wooden model ships and pictures of “L’Hermione”. This ship was built in 1779 but very similar as the “La Méduse”. Especially the back of “La Méduse” is based on that of “L’Hermione” as the original one was much too difficult to rebuild in LEGO.
