Zhen Hua 10 - On A Sandbank - Slufter - Maasvlakte - Rotterdam - Holland

            In the night of Friday 1 on Saturday 2 February 2008 the Chinese vessel Zhen Hua 10 runned aground on a sandbank near the Slufter on the Maasvlakte, not far from its destination and only 450 meters from the coast. There where 33 people on board.

It happend when the ship was waiting outside the Rotterdam harbour because of a storm with windforce 10. The same storm that made the anchor chain break from the ship.

The 250 meters long ship Zhen Hua 10 carried 5 gigantic container cranes. 4 of them for container terminals in the Rotterdam Harbour and 1 for the Bremerhaven harbour in Germany. 

From left to right: 1 orange/blue for Euromax/ECT, 2 light blue for APM, 1 dark blue that I still do not know and the yellow 1 for MSC Bremerhaven.

ZPMC on the side of the ship is from Zhen Hua Port Machine Company, the Shanghai company that built the cranes.

On Sunday 3 February round 12.30 PM at high tide under good weather conditions 2 tugboats of Smit Salvage and 1 of Kotug tried to free the ship from the sandbank. The cable of the Kotug tugboat broke and the salvage of the ship failed.

However the hard wind and the low temperature of 5 degrees Celcius hundreds of people from all over Holland came to the beach on Saturday and Sunday to watch the ship and the salvage. There even was a traffic congestion on the road to the beach.
