Fort Point Lighthouse At Sunset with Golden Gate Bridge Arch

This is an image of the Lighthouse on top of Fort Point just under the Arch of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Fort Point Lighthouse isn't by any means one of the more spectacular lighthouses along the California Coast and is no longer in use.

I had hoped to be able go up in to the Lighthouse and take some pictures looking out over the bay. The day started out with me attempting to get pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge at sunrise with the towers sticking out of the top of the fog. But alas, the fog was well above the bridge and well above the Marin Headlands so the morning was spent socked in by fog. Typical if you wish to Photograph the coast of California in the summer months expect fog.

I drove up and down the coast but everything was fogged in. I returned to Fort Point hoping to get some shots of the interior of the fort or find something of interest. Just before dark, the fog relented for a few brief seconds and the top edge of the sun peaked though the fog. Just barely long enough for me to snap off two shots of the sunset under the Golden Gate Bridge Arch and Fort Point Lighthouse you see here.

I spent much of my time at Fort Point talking to one of the rangers that tend to the fort. I learned quite a bit. Man what I wouldn't give to have his job. I don't imagine it pays to well but I think it would be great to help protect and promote history and meet people.

Fort Point is situated just under the Golden Gate Bridge and has been there since before California was a state. Its current construction was designed based in part on Fort Sumter on the East Coast and constructed to protect gold shipments coming out of San Francisco from Confederate sympathizers. The fort was later used after the bombing of Pearl Harbor to help protect San Francisco Bay and the many ship construction yards from attack by Japan.

Fort Point is in the process of being restored and it was only recently that the public was allowed back up on top of the fort with the installation of new guard rails. The old ones had been slowly rusted away by the constant attack of salt air on the iron.

If you visit the Golden Gate Bridge, it's well worth a trip down to Fort Point below the bridge not only for the views of the bridge but for the rich history of the location. The current Lighthouse atop Fort Point is actually the third one and consist of a small iron skeleton tower. As far as lighthouses go, it isn't much to look at but does have a fantastic view of the Pacific, The Golden Gate Bridge and the City of San Francisco from atop the fort.
