Butterflies - Thousands of Monarchs - a photo on Flickriver

Monarchs at Santa Cruz - Bridges Beach State Park.

A few days ago I posted a picture of a single Monarch butterfly taken at the
Santa Cruz Bridges State Park. This is but one of many, many clumps of
butterflies that seek shelter in the protected costal valley next to the
beach. There are literally hundreds of thousands of Monarchs at the beach
during the winter months. When I first saw this, I thought it was nothing
more than leaves on the trees till some few around. They tend to clump on
the eucalyptus trees for protection and to warm themselves in the sun. You
need to go when it's fairly cold if you want to see them all clumped up like
this. A good strong lens helps as they can be quite a ways above the
viewing decks. It is truly one of nature's amazing sights. There are
several other sites up and down the coast but none quite as accessible.

When done photographing the butterflies, go down and shoot the natural bridge at the beach or shoot the lighthouse or boardwalk.
