Butterfly - Study of the Cairns Birdwing Butterfly (1 of 4)

This is a Cairns Birdwing Butterfly which are pretty common butterflies
found in most butterfly exhibits. As a result you will find a huge
selection of them on Flickr if the photographer took the time to look up the
type of butterfly. They have very brightly, almost day-glow colors on their
undersides and more subdued colors on top which is somewhat reverse of most
butterflies. They come from Australia.

Typically I go to the butterfly exhibit at Six Flags Wild Kingdom (formerly
known as Marine World) which offers the exhibit each year during the season.
If you plan to shoot butterflies in one of the exhibits, I recommend you
wear shorts and take a damp towel even if the weather outside is not
suitable. To keep the butterflies active they keep the interior
temperature usually in the upper 80 and with a very high humidity. About 15
to 30 minutes of shooting is all I can stand without having to go out and
cool down. A tripod is handy as is a good low light lens. Most people
who do this on a serious basis will have a vibration reduction lens to help
with handheld shots. It is not often that the butterfly cooperates.
Especially not the more interesting ones.
