FW: The Monolith & The Merced - El Capitan Yosemite National Park, California

El Capitan towers above the forest as the spring rush fills the Merced river
and continues the process of reshaping Yosemite Valley. I had to climb
across the many boulders that had been unearthed by the power of the Merced
river to get El Capitan in the shot properly. These boulders were
originally deposited by the receding glacier that carved Yosemite Valley.
Then they lay beneath Yosemite Lake before it filled in and became a meadow.
For a time, the Native Americans kept Yosemite Valley's meadows cleared by
using the many resourced the meadows provided. Yosemite Valley's meadows
are now filling in with tall evergreen pines and if it continues the meadows
will disappear as the river cuts deeper and deeper in to Yosemite Valley
possibly reforming back in to a river canyon which was how it started before
the ice ages. Even the mighty El Capitan will splinter and fall away as ice
sheds the surface layers of rocks away. Every few years, this process
causes large rock slides as the ice expands in the cracks of the rocks.
But don't worry, this process will take hundreds, possibly millions of
years, so you still have time to see Yosemite Valley as a U shaped glacier
carved valley we have all come to know and love.

To get to this location I parked next to the pull out area as you just enter
Yosemite Valley next to Bridal Veil Falls. I walked along a trail over to
the Merced only to see this steep bank of yellow boulders falling in to the
river. I had to walk down till the bank leveled out then carefully climb
over many loose boulders, some much larger than seen, till I could get El
Capitan and the log in the shot. I stopped the camera down to blur the
spring rapids of the Merced river. Of course this meant I did all the
climbing with my tripod which helped as a walking stick and my heavy
backpack of camera gear. I am not sure of the wisdom of doing this but I
really wanted to get the shot from the river bank instead of the top of the
bank of boulders. By the time I arrived where I wanted to be, clouds
filled the sky but since the weather changes by the minute, it wasn't long
until there were blue skies showing though the clouds once more and I was
able to come home with this shot.
