            Первый деревянный храм на этом месте был построен по приказу Михаила Федоровича, первого царя династии Романовых, в 1630-е годы — в память об избавлении Москвы от поляков.

В 1650-е годы на месте деревянной церкви была возведена и освящена новая — каменная. Причиной тому стало рождение у царя Алексея Михайловича наследника: царевич Дмитрий Алексеевич родился аккурат в день Казанской иконы Божьей Матери в 1649 году.

Казанская церковь сооружена в характерном для зодчества XVII века стиле. Она возведена на высоком цоколе, купол колокольни выполнен в виде шатра, основной объем церкви имеет кубическую форму. Два высоких крыльца ведут на галерею-гульбище. К основному объему храма примыкают два придела с дополнительными алтарями. На первом этаже храма (в подклете) когда-то хранили самое ценное имущество — казну.

Главная святыня храма — икона Божией Матери «Державная». Согласно донесению митрополита Московского Тихона, она была найдена в подвале Вознесенской церкви. В приделе равноап. Аверкия хранится уникальная святыня — выполненная из дерева скульптура Иисуса Христа.

Казанский храм был царским домовым храмом. На службу приходила только царская семья и ближайшее окружение царя. Для царицы и царевен был построен крытый переход, который соединял женскую половину Дворца Алексея Михайловича с храмом. В связи с этим церковь также называли той, “что на переходах”.

The first wooden temple on this site was built by order of Mikhail Fedorovich, the first tsar of the Romanov dynasty, in the 1630s, in memory of the deliverance of Moscow from the Poles.

In the 1650s, a new stone church was erected and consecrated on the site of a wooden church. The reason for this was the birth of an heir to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich: Tsarevich Dmitry Alekseevich was born exactly on the day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in 1649.

The Kazan Church was built in the style characteristic of the architecture of the 17th century. It was erected on a high plinth, the dome of the bell tower is made in the form of a tent, the main volume of the church has a cubic shape. Two high porches lead to the open-air gallery. Two aisles with additional altars adjoin the main volume of the temple. On the first floor of the temple (in the basement) they once kept the most valuable property - the treasury.

The main shrine of the temple is the icon of the Mother of God "Sovereign". According to the report of Metropolitan Tikhon of Moscow, she was found in the basement of the Ascension Church. In the aisle is equal to Averky, a unique shrine is kept - a sculpture of Jesus Christ made of wood.

The Kazan temple was the royal house temple. Only the royal family and the immediate circle of the king came to the service. For the queen and princesses, a covered passage was built, which connected the female half of the Palace of Alexei Mikhailovich with the temple. In this regard, the church was also called the one "that is in the passages."
