20040629_9889...Is there any beauty in this?

Looking westward into the Great Salt Lake along the axis of Spiral Jetty. The lake was low when I was there: it barely reached the end of the jetty. Tiny brine flies were all over the jetty. As I walked along the jetty, a cloud of them rose from the salt ahead of me and flew haphazardly until I had passed, at which point they settled on the salt again. As I looked down at this, it looked as if I were creating a wave of flies just in front of my feet.

This was my first visit to the shore of the Great Salt Lake. I was wearing shorts and was worried about the flies. It was a pleasant surprise to learn that although I bothered them as I walked, they did not bother me.
