I met this guy in Auckland Central. He spotted me with my camera and asked me for some small change so I offered him $2 in exchange for a photograph. He is quite a familiar character although he often walks with his head down and nobody really knows his name.

The light was perfect as it was just dying but I didn't really make full use of it. I wanted to move him into a better position and to get a better composition but he wouldn't look directly at the camera and seemed a little uncomfortable. I would like to have placed him more in the center and hidden some of the distracting bokeh to his left but it's just my own thoughts.

Given the rushed nature of this shot I was happy with the outcome although I spent the rest of my night pondering this guy and what his story was. Why did he feel uncomfortable looking into the lens? Was it because nobody really wants a lens pointed in their direction. Or perhaps he had been well photographed over the years? Or perhaps it was a life so broken that he was just feeling alone and sick of living on the street. I wished I had been given more time to get to know his story, perhaps next time.
