20230412-_DSC5859 - Rainbow Trout

            Although Rainbow Trout are relatives of the salmon they don't die after spawning and will return to the lake they migrated from and spawn several times in their lifetime.
The egg hatchlings are called "alevins" and they will feed in the stream where they hatched for 2 - 3 years before they migrate to the mouth of the stream or tributary and move out into the lake to feed and mature.
This species is one of North Americas top sportfish. A "hover' is the name given to a group of Rainbow Trout.
The average weight for this species is about 8 lbs but the Ontario record is 40.7 lbs.
