Dry Splashes

            We like classifying things into neat little buckets in our everyday lives. This little bucket over here contains solids, things I can hold on to, and this other one over there, liquids, stuff that refuses to remain in my hands no matter how much I try to keep it there. 

Doing this is useful, most of the time, for instance it lets us chose which of the words "eat" or "drink" to use when refering to things we can ingest. But then one day you go to the beach, and without even realizing it, you've started to deal with something seemingly in between solid and liquid. Sand.

See, according to the authority in scientific knowledge that is Wikipedia, sand is composed of eroded pieces of rock up to 2mm in size. That's clearly not liquid, and having had sand in my mouth a few times, I can say that my teeth will vouch for that. 

But obviously, it's not entirely solid either, in fact, Wikipedia tells me that the behavior of sand is governed in part by non-newtonian fluid dynamics, which means it acts differently depending on how much force is acted upon it: you can slowly sink your hand in the sand, but try and strike it with all your strength, and it hurts like hell. 

So in which bucket does sand go exactly ? It doesn't matter, our buckets are full of holes, and sand keeps pouring out.
