Great Central Railway Leicester Leicestershire 22nd December 2013

            British Railways Standard Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell ready to depart with the non-stop returning Santa Plus train. We had plenty of time so I dropped down to capture a few shots of this fine engine. The first two coaches are LNER teak vehicles.

It was interesting to compare the Brit with 7 coaches on a 8 mile non-stop train versus the N2 with 7 (plus the diesel of course) last week. The class 7 70013 just sailed up our gentle banks while the class 4 1744 was working pretty hard all the way. The steam heat was on so both drank water but with the Brit's larger boiler it was not really an issue whereas you had to be always on top of the N2.

This was the first weekend Cromwell has been used since coming back to the railway from main line work but it will be in service over the Christmas & New Year period and is to stay at the GCR for the January Gala.
