Butterworth Malaysia 11th April 1981

            Butterworth station and Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Class 22 diesel 22114 runs onto the stock of our 09.15 Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur train.

There were 40 Class 22 Diesel Electric mainline locomotives, 22101 - 22140, manufactured by a consortium of English Electric, Associated Electrical Industries A.E.I., and Metro-Cammell in Saltley, Birmingham, England, UK. They were bought into service in 1971-1972.

We had spent the night on Penang island and crossed over to Butterworth on the ferry. The bridge connecting the island with the mainland had not been built at that time. We had actually booked on the 08.30 express but missed it as the ferry took longer than we expected!
