THEN Blackhawk & Central City Narrow Gauge RR Depot, Central City Colorado USA October 1979

            We were staying with friends in Denver and drove out into the mountains for the day but the short heritage line was not working on the day of our visit. The original line opened in the late 1870s as the Colorado & Southern (C&S) & operated until 1938 when the company started to abandon sections of the narrow gauge (3 foot).
 
In 1968, this section was restored into the town of Central City. The line was only a few hundred feet long and ran on the original C&S trackbed to Packard Gulch. It became a tourist operation and was relatively successful but the greater success of another nearby longer section of the line known as the Georgetown Loop led to the Central City line being abandoned in 1981.
 
In 1987, the line was again rebuilt. The new owners operated this original C&S Baldwin 2-8-0 71 that was left there in 1941 for display. The engine was restored and ran between 1987 and 1989. It was a very small operation and only lasted for two of three seasons and was for a third time abandoned.
 
 There are no tracks there now but C&S #71 is still in Central City on display outside the Grand Z Casino & hotel…!
