Medan North Sumatra Indonesia June 1980

            The Mobil Oil Indonesia office on Jalan Sudirman where I worked in 1979-81. As a geophysicist in the oil and gas industry I spent most of my time interpreting seismic data & making sub-surface maps of potential hydrocarbon bearing beds and selecting prospective well locations to test the interpretation. 

This was my 1980s state-of-the art analogue interpretation work station: Paper prints of individual 2D lines, paper maps and coloured pencils. Not a computer in sight! Although much data processing was carried out by geophysical contractors to convert the raw recorded sound signal to a usable end-product.

The largest map shows the whole of Indonesia with Petroleum Contract Areas and Wildcat well locations marked. Not that obviously but highlighted  in yellow on the large map below it are the MOI licences: Arun in Aceh and (my area of interest) NSB in the North Sumatra Offshore. The MOI acreage was mainly prospective for gas & minor oil in Middle Miocene reef deposits.

By the time of my return visit in 1993 Mobil had moved to Jakarta & this office had become a Pizza Hut... today even that has gone.
