Bangor Station North Wales Whitsuntide May 1973

            Diesel Class 24 5039 on a traditional freight train, complete with brake van, departs Bangor railway station west-bound past the London & North Western Railway signal box. The semaphore signals are still active but the platform-end water tank had just been felled. 

Bangor station is located between two tunnels, the one seen here is at the west end taking the line to the Isle of Anglesey & Holyhead.

D5039 was renumbered to TOPS 24039 not long after this but only lasted until July 1976 before being withdrawn from service. She was cut up by British Railways at Swindon Works in 1978.
