Santa Fe "Grand Canyon", Willow Springs IL 1967

            Santa Fe train #24, the eastbound "Grand Canyon", passes the depot at Willow Springs IL in early 1967.

At this point in time, standard equipment still included both chair & sleeper cars, plus a diner and dorm-lounge between Chicago and Winslow. Passengers beyond that point could get breakfast westbound or dinner eastbound during a 45 minute station stop at Barstow. 

I suppose you could call this a true "mixed-train daily", since the common inclusion of TOFC cars plus mail & express business during this era (not confined to Santa Fe, BTW) was likely paying for the bulk of this train's expenses.

Within a year of this photo the train had lost its sleepers, diner and dorm car, and had basically become a glorified transcontinental local, often running with a mere two coaches.
