Flowers of Indian Bean Tree (Catalpa bignonioides)

            Southern Catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides) is a species of Catalpa, native to the southeastern United States in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. It is also sometimes known as Indian Bean Tree. 
It is a medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 15-18 meters tall, with a trunk up to 1 m diameter with brown to gray bark, maturing into hard plates or ridges. The short thick trunk supports long and straggling branches which form a broad and irregular head. The roots are fibrous and branches are brittle. 

Catalpa è il nome con cui gli indiani d'America designavano questa pianta. Questa specie è originaria infatti delle regioni meridionali degli Stati Uniti, da dove è stata portata in Europa attorno al 1730, per i suoi pregi ornamentali, naturalizzandosi qua e là. La catalpa è un albero rustico, tollerante del freddo e non ha particolari esigenze di terreno; preferisce posizioni solleggiate e riparate dal vento. Il legname è di qualità mediocre, ha grana grossa, è tenace e durevole.
L'interesse prevalente è come pianta ornamentale, per le grandi e vistose infiorescenze , la chioma espansa e i caratteristici lunghi baccelli simili a sigari.
