The Pool of Narcissus - a photo on Flickriver

On clear nights we are so fortunate to be treated to a magic light show. It's all pure physics and Sir Isaac Newton explained everything in his groundbreaking work, "Opticks: or, A Treatise of the Reflexions, Refractions, Inflexions and Colours of Light " (1704). In fact, Newton wrote more about theology and ancient philosophy than he did of pure science. These documents were hidden away in a trunk which came to light after his death. Unfortunately, these facts have been suppressed over the years so as not to tarnish the name of the greatest scientist of all time. There was more than a little Prospero in Newton.

My point is simply to echo Shakespeare's magnificent line from Hamlet: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

My argument (which I won't take up your time with today) is that when humans began to sever the umbilical cord with Nature, and became city dwellers dependent on our technological creations, we looked into the rockpool and saw a reflection and fell in love with ourselves (Narcissus). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissus_(mythology)

"Man is the measure of all things!" became our dominant cultural mantra. And we've been paying for it ever since. It is no surprise then that people have their most mystical experiences when Nature is allowed to overwhelm our minds. The heart is always a stronger and better guide to the Truth than the head.

Intuition. The things we humans were capable of before we invented language and rationality would truly astound. Prospero's magic indeed!
