A Grass Harp

If we take my previous view of the mountains and move further SE, this is the view. Directly ahead of us, a distant 55kms away is Tasmania's second highest mountain, Ben Lomond. Once again the foreground is a sea of wild native grasses that do look like a wheat field. (All we need now is Vincent van Gogh's crows en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatfield_with_Crows ).

My title is however taken from the first published novel of Truman Capote (1924-1984). I remember being swept along in high school reading this story of rural life in 1930s Alabama. "The Grass Harp" was a magical evocation of a world seen from a tree house, and based on a childhood where young Truman and his dear friend Nellie Harper Lee (who was to become the author of a magnificent novel herself, "To Kill a Mockingbird"), grew up feeling outsiders in a big world.

Capote originally planned to call his novel "Music of the Sawgrass", but as with most successful books, the change in title was the right thing. The meaning of the phrase is given in the opening chapter, it's the sound of the wind through a field of tall grass.
