By now you will have noticed a pattern to Tasmania's early buildings. Almost all of them were built by convict labour. But not just that, many of them were owned by former convicts themselves. And this is true of this grand old coaching inn at Kempton. Despite the harsh punishments and conditions of life in 19th century Tasmania, people really were given a second chance at life. And many of these former convicts not only grabbed it, but made outstanding contributions to the establishment of the colonies that were to become Australia.

The situation today is almost exactly the reverse - and much to our detriment I believe. Punishments today are softer and crime is more prevalent (people didn't need to lock their houses then), and yet people today are far less forgiving. Try making a contribution to the nation today with a criminal past! But where would Tasmania have been today had it not been for our convicts? That's why they win my respect.

This wonderful house was built in 1842 by another former convict, William Henry Ellis. This convict turned entrepreneur, started a successful coach service between Hobart and Kempton terminating, at his own complex which included big stables for the horses.

Dysart House has been owned by some prominent people in its day, including stage and TV actor Reg Livermore, and restaurant critic and impresario Leo Scofield. Schofield, who was in Tasmania organising the Baroque Festival, spent considerable time and money in a magnificent seven-year restoration of Dysart House. He sold it and left Tasmania in a huff because his arts festival didn't get the funding he wanted. His parting words created quite a stir. www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-04/tasmanians-are-dregs-bogan...
He excused his comments saying he had been drinking and was taking anti-depressants. So as you can see, although he deserves credit for restoring Dysart House, he is not welcome here anymore!

Dysart House is now the home of the Old Kempton Distillery.
