Launceston Floods 2022

This is a panorama of six vertical shots taken with the Nikon D850 and the Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD lens. I wanted the sky to feature prominently in this panorama so that it creates the impression of laying over the land like a blanket. I hope that as you enlarge the shot you'll feel something of the enormity of the scene. Black and white because it is ideal for documentary work, since colour doesn't distract from the essentials.

Okay. It looks like a lake in front of the City of Launceston. Only this was dry land farming land 24 hours ago. We are looking at an inland lake that has suddenly emerged several kilometres wide and probably about 5 kilometres in length.

Over the next few days I'll show you some more of the flooding, and take you into the Cataract Gorge which is now a raging river as the flood waters pour over the completely full Trevallyn Dam. Since Launceston is built on a flood plain where the North and South Esk Rivers meet the Tamar River estuary, it has always been prone to flooding. Since then the city has developed a fairly effective system of levee walls, but even so the effects are felt all over. Several people lost their lives in our last floods in 2016. Although the major part of the rainfall has stopped, the river systems will feed all that water down into the Tamar to go out to sea. So the next 24-48 hours will be critical. Already several outlying areas have been evacuated.

So we fully expect this inland lake to enlarge even more in the next few days.
