Dolorite Towers of Strength - a photo on Flickriver

The Cataract Gorge has been steadily shaped over a period of 80 million years. But according to geologists about 40 million years ago there was a series of massive earthquakes (far in excess of what the earth experiences today) that ripped the rocky river bed apart and forming the chasm that exists today. www.abc.net.au/local/photos/2015/09/02/4304727.htm

The prime rock in this region is volcanic in origin. Dolerite is one of the strongest igneous rocks on earth, and Tasmania has the largest proportion of Dolerite anywhere in the world, with more than half the Tasmanian landscape underlain with Dolerite from the Jurassic era (200-145 million years ago). www.mrt.tas.gov.au/mrtdoc/dominfo/download/UR1991_22/UR19...

So although there is massive power in these waters, the rocks stand firm. They've experienced much worse before.
