Why would anyone in their right mind want to turn a powerful DSLR camera like the Nikon D850 into an ancient camera obscura where there is no lens - simply a pinhole to allow the light onto the sensor?

Well it seems there are thousands of people around the world who are quite prepared to do this. So much so that a startup company was formed in Canada (though the product is manufactured in China from high quality aluminium) to produce a range of pinhole "lenses".

My Thingyfy has a choice of 8 pinhole apertures ranging from 0.1 to 0.8 mm with a 120 degree field of view (these all register as f/0 on my camera). Frankly the best results are produced by the smallest of apertures, but it requires a longer exposure. Experimentation is the key, and this is the reason why it pays to start off in pinhole photography working digitally. It will save you a lot of money on wasted exposures. Once you have mastered the light it is much easier to make the transition to old style film pinhole photography. But believe me, this is still a very different form of photography to what you are used to.

Over the next few days I'll give you a few pointers and direct you to some inspirational photographers working in this field.

So back to my question about why someone would turn from high quality digital imaging to a decidedly low-tech approach to their art? Well perhaps the answer itself is in the very question. In an age when artificial intelligence threatens the future of photography itself (people already talk about "camera-less photography" - an oxymoron if ever there was one), and in a time when phone cameras using computer based technology can literally churn out images of high quality (over 4 billion every day), isn't there another way to experience doing real photography?

The analog-retro comeback is based on the fact that many young people are wanting to experience the joy of photography that their ancestors had. Let's face it, there's nothing joyful about a smart phone snap in photographic terms. Your pet could take a good photo if you taught it to press the shutter button. So what are our human strengths? Creative crafting using hands on experience! And so whilst AI is killing photography to death (that's not over stated, professional photography is dying - people are taking their own wedding and portrait photos these days), the old craft of photography just won't go away.

* I should just add that whilst I could have made my own pinhole adapter for my F-mount, the Thingyfy comes with a filter adapter. This has two advantages: (1) the UV filter keeps dust out of the sensor (and believe me in pinhole every grain of dust shows), and (2) for black and white I can use coloured filters for effect.
