There are two levels of the court system in Tasmania. This system evolved during colonial times before the Australian colonies became federated states, and reflects the differences in each of the original colonies.

The Magistrates Court is locally based and handles most matters of civil and minor criminal offences before a magistrate. The Supreme Court is conducted by judges and runs jury trials that deal with serious criminal offences. 

This differs from the larger Australian states: Victoria has a County Court and New South Wales a District Court handling many of the serious crimes, with the Supreme Court dealing with murder and the most serious state offences. The High Court in Canberra is the Australian equivalent to the Supreme Court in the USA, and is the last point of appeal in the Australian legal process.
