Tasmanian Parliament - a photo on Flickriver

The architect of this building was the greatest colonial architect in Australia other than Francis Greenway. www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/53269779360/in/album-72...
His name was John Lee Archer (1791-1852). A civil engineer, Archer was responsible for most of the civic buildings and engineering structures of the first half of 19th century Van Diemen's Land.

Originally this building (on reclaimed land from the sea) was designed in 1830 to be a Customs House for the port. But by 1841 the Legislative Council began meeting in chambers. When the new bicameral parliament was established in the colony in 1856, final alterations were made to turn this into a proper House of Parliament. Archer had died in Stanley four years earlier.

I won't go into the vagaries of the Hare-Clark electoral system in Tasmania, but in short it means there are 5 electorates with 7 members in each for the Legislative Assembly. This proportional representation means it is almost impossible in contemporary Tasmania to have a majority government. This does not create stability regarding major decisions, especially when minor parties and independents are hell bent on pushing radical agendas. Tasmania goes to the polls on Saturday March 23.

In any case this is a lovely compact parliament house that serves the state well.
