Northern Flicker male intergrade

This Northern Flicker paused briefly on a backyard fence in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This image shows orange tail feathers, intermediate between the red-shafted and yellow-shafted forms. That this male is an intergrade is further confirmed by the red malar (cheek stripe) in conjunction with the red patch on the back of the head. This is a particularly charismatic species of woodpecker, colourful and vocal.
