Blue Dasher Dragonfly -- Immature Female (Pachydiplex longipenis); Tucson, Arizona, Sweetwater Wetlands [Lou Feltz]

            In this view, you can see the brown eye color of this dragonfly. It's newly emerged, and the eyes will soon change to a striking turquoise as it ages. Most odonates have huge eyes like this. The white face of both sexes of this species is also a good field mark to note, and I try for a front view if the critter cooperates. I find that I have relatively few images of this female... most of my viewed Blue Dashers are males. Even rarer is a capture of an immature female. This one is newly emerged... it is so fresh and undamaged. Like for most odonates (and also birds), the common name of the species derives from the regularly more colorful appearance of the males.
