Wood Ducks -- Two Mated Pairs (Aix sponsa); Albuquerque, NM, Tingley Beach Park [Lou Feltz]

            These ducks are, hands down, one of the showiest bird pairs in North America. While the species was threatened by habitat loss, excessive hunting, etc., it has made a remarkable comeback in our area because of conservation practices that include artificial nest boxes near water and ideal habitat. While they are more common in eastern areas, they are readily observed in numbers at several Albuquerque urban sites especially in winter. At the heavily visited adjacent city park they often approach closely because they have become inured to the presence of people. However, later in winter several mated pairs go to these two larger state park ponds nearer to the Rio Grande. These shallow lakes have heavy shore vegetation that provides better cover for sheltering the ducklings from overhead predation. I hope these two pairs find this lake to their liking.
