Locust Borer - a photo on Flickriver

Locust Borer

            (Megacyllene robiniae).  Eastern Missouri.

This striking beetle was a major target of mine on a recent trip through the Midwest.  Though they are not rare or difficult to find, they evoke many fond memories of observing nature.  As a kid growing up near Chicago I remember catching them in the fall in the fields around my home.  They don't occur here in East Texas (yet), as we are outside of the historic range of their host range, black locust, and it had been over 20 years since I had seen one.

The locust borer is a member of the family Cerambycidae, or the longhorn beetles.  An effective wasp mimic, it can also be a major pest to black locust trees, as the larvae bore and develop into their wood.  The adults seem to feed exclusively on goldenrod (Solidago spp.), and can be found in great numbers on the flowers in the fall, when the goldenrod blooms.
